SCM August Concert
The theme for the SCM choir’s August 2010 concert is “Four Centuries of English Sacred Music”. The Chamber Choir and the main choir will sing pieces by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625), William Boyce (1711-1779), Samuel S. Wesley (1810-1876) - celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth (descendant of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church), organist and composer of the melody Aurelia, for the text “The Church’s one Foundation”, by S.J. Stone, and the anthem Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace; and other composers, through to the 20th century and Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934), Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), whose delicate and expressive Te Deum will be sung by the main choir, and John Rutter (1945 - ) from whose Requiem Ruy Wanderley (celebrating his 25th year as SCM choirmaster) has chosen the delightful Psalm 23, which the choir is dedicating to the memory of the late Jan Benedict, for many years a supporter, friend and treasurer of the SCM. The concert will be held as usual in Christ Church on Monday, August 16th, starting at 8pm.
